OnLive Released the OnLive Viewer for the Android Market Including Google TV

OnLive released the OnLive Viewer for the Android Market. It requires Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and higher. The OnLive Viewer for iOS is already available for more than a year, but we are still waiting for the fully featured OnLive App for iOS that supports gameplay. On the other hand gamers can already for a month enjoy the fully featured OnLive App for Android, which was installed almost 100,000 times and got rave reviews by users.

A curious fact is that the OnLive Viewer App for Android requires Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and higher, but the fully featured OnLive App for Android only requires Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and higher.

There is speculation that the OnLive Viewer App for Android is a test for the fully featured App, before it gets released for Google TV, the intent of releasing on it OnLive has already stated. The Viewer App runs virtually on any Android device as long as it runs Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and higher, unlike the full App which is compatible with many, but not all Android devices.

Even OnLive has in the description of the Viewer App stated that "Your game profile is stored in the cloud so you can play on your Android tablet or phone and then sign on to your Google TV to watch your friends play." This could mean that Google TV will only support the OnLive Viewer App, or it's simply been worded that way by OnLive, and Google TV will sometime support the full OnLive App.

The url address for the OnLive Viewer App for Android ends with "clientgtv", so it's primarily meant for Google TV.

There is already a user review of the Viewer App based on the Logitech Revue Google TV Box and it works well on it.

Maybe OnLive has some bigger plans with the App, like gaming TV shows and spectating of gaming tournaments.

Here's the description of the OnLive Viewer App for Android from OnLive:

The OnLive Viewer gives you a window into on-demand, instant-play video games.

Gaming becomes a spectator sport in the Arena, where you can instantly watch hundreds of games being played live by gamers throughout the world.

“You can also be a spectator, watching live multiplayer games in progress and move from game to game as if you were surfing channels on TV.” —VentureBeat

Perhaps we will learn more next week, as OnLive has several announcements in store for the 2012 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show), which will be taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 10-13. There is already a well-sourced rumour that major TV companies will be making announcements of new net-connected Smart TVs arriving with a bundled OnLive App at the CES 2012, maybe there will also be announcements which will include more news about OnLive and Google TV.

You can try the OnLive Viewer App for Android or even the fully featured OnLive App for Android.
