Spiderweb Software Interview: Avadon: The Black Fortress is Coming to OnLive

In the past, it has been very difficult for smaller video game developers to really get word out about their games. However, if the future of OnLive goes as planned, that may no longer be an issue. OnLive has teamed with many small developers since they have launched their cloud gaming service.

Spiderweb Software happens to be one of those smaller companies. Although Spiderweb does not have any of their games on the OnLive service, in an exclusive interview we have found out they do in fact have plans in the works.

Spiderweb Software is a small game developing company from Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1994, they are dedicated to creating games for Windows and Macintosh computers. While they only have 3 employees working for them, Spiderweb Software also frequently hires freelancers to help with projects. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to interview the company’s president, Jeff Vogel.

First we asked Vogel if Spiderweb Software had any plans to bring their games to the cloud gaming service.

“We are working with OnLive to bring our newest game, Avadon: The Black Fortress to the platform,” explained Vogel. “We are not sure when it will be available.”

Avadon: The Black Fortress is as Vogel explained, “A deep old school role playing game with a cool and involved story. There aren’t a lot of games like that, so for people who like that niche, it’s a great title.”

Although he isn’t 100% certain as of yet, Vogel believes that the game will be added to the OnLive PlayPack. The PlayPack is a $9.99/month subscription based plan that gives gamers access to over 90 different games for no additional charge.

The game has received very good reviews, from those that have played it. Here is a quick overview of the game from Spiderweb Software’s website:
The first chapter in a new, epic fantasy saga. You will serve the keep of Avadon, working as a spy and warrior to fight the enemies of your homeland. As a servant of the Black Fortress, your word is law. Experience an exciting fantasy role-playing adventure and battle a conspiracy to destroy your people.

Avadon: The Black Fortress Features:
  • Epic fantasy role-playing adventure in an enormous and unique world.
  • Four different character classes, with dozens of unique spells and abilities.
  • Uncover the fascinating history of Avadon and the land of Lynaeus.
  • Many different endings. Your choices will change the world.
  • Dozens of side quests, hidden dungeons, and secrets to discover.
  • Hundreds of magical items to find. Use powerful crystals to make your artifacts even more powerful.
  • Huge adventure with lots of replay value.
We went on to ask Vogel, if he plans to bring any of their other games to OnLive. He responded, “I’m waiting to see how the first one does. I’m sure OnLive is as well.”

If they do in fact decide to bring older titles or future games to OnLive, there are plenty of interesting games to choose from. The Spiderweb game catalog includes titles such as Avernum: Second Trilogy, Geneforge, Nethergate, and many more.

Finally we asked Vogel about the changing environment of the video game industry, and what the biggest change is, that they have seen over the years.

“Everything has gotten better for Indie developers. The opportunities on Steam and iTunes for small developers are truly beyond anything I ever thought would happen,” he explained.
