The patent covering OnLive CEO Steve Perlman's amazing new wireless tech

Steve Perlman was right, when talking about asking the right questions. The way this amazing new wireless tech works is that it actively cancels out interference at the transmitter, instead of just maximizing the received signal, it's a creative new way to look at the problem of channel utilization.

It's a form of spatial multiplexing, with some additional math on top of it. They derive a set of coefficients describing the channel from every transmitter to every receiver. Then they tweak the values of the channels in a matrix such that they aim the nulls in transmission for a given channel at receivers who don't want to receive it.

This allows you to send more signals to those who want it, while avoiding sending it to those who don't want it. This is done with multiple transmitters, to multiple receivers, all at the same time, and the coefficient matrix is kept updated along the way.

Channel capacity is proportional to S/N. If a single transmitted signal is 20 db over the noise floor, and you can reduce the level of interference below that value, you could get 100 times the original bandwidth for a given system and this tech can do just that.

Gaikai is growing balls

Godzilla, oops i mean Gaikai, ok let's say Gaizilla is growing balls. Imagine Godzilla with big hairy balls, Gaizilla.

With the help of Judas' empire and the dark side of the force:

gaizilla is gaining power.

As we already know our Gaizilla likes to mate, amongst others they are in bed with Akamai and Limelight, and view themselves as a content distribution network. When or if Gaikai manages to reach a deal with Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo or all of them to be part of their future consoles, either at launch or later, this is big. Gaikai's strategy is to be the force behind those services, on the other side OnLive is perceived as a competitor to the consoles, this image that onlive has is partly on behalf of Gaizilla PR.

This way Gaizilla has an advantage for striking a deal with the console guys and the console guys are starting to take the cloud serious. For example, when gaikai works on maybe even the Xbox 360, Microsoft doesn't have to say that their cloud enabled games run through gaikai, they say we built those cloud enabled games and this is our cool new service.

It isn't surprising OnLive is talking to the console guys, they see what gaikai is attempting, if they don't react they might get overrun by sheer numbers.

Gaizilla doesn't target people directly, they go after the big corporations, the money. Their targets are the big console guys, Facebook, Google, the big movie companys and other entertainment companys, Walmart and other big retailers that carry entertainment.

The big entertainment entities could see in Gaikai a way of getting into the games market and that in a big way. They have the money and can pay gaikai the server infrastructure.

Gaizilla hasn't forgotten it's mudslinging ways either and still likes to throw dirt.

OnLive releases Homefront Large-Scale Warfare Multiplayer to PlayPack

OnLive releases what it calls Homefront Large-Scale Warfare Multiplayer, with other words Homefront Multiplayer, to the PlayPack. That takes the PlayPack to 64 games and counting.

OnLive released the game day-and-date with the console and PC versions and it was their most successful title to date, the Homefront MP was the most popular on OnLive. At release for OnLive the game lacked dedicated servers, 32-player MP and had some other problems that befell the console and PC versions too. Well, that all got fixed and with the release of the Homefront MP to the PlayPack, the Homefront MP got even more populated.

To celebrate the release of Homefront MP to the PlayPack onlive is holding the Homefront Large-Scale Warfare Occupation of OnLive contest on Friday, July 1, 2011 from 3:00PM to 4:59PM PDT. Any one who owns a PlayPass, is a PlayPack subscriber or plays the free demo during that time-frame can win when he plays the MP portion of the game. Prizes include a headset, a drone parrot, an OnLive Game Controller and Full PlayPasses.

To coincide with the Homefront MP release to the PlayPack, a free trial for Homefront was also released, as i mentioned before you can also participate in the Homefront MP contest with the free trial.

The Unholy Trinity

The Unholy Trinity, the three greatest enemies of OnLive, which are EA, Gaikai and Eurogamer. Let me go into detail about all of them.

1. Judas. Yes, that's you EA. Well, EA was prominently featured in the onlive beta period with games like Crysis, Mirror's Edge and Burnout Paradise. EA was also the biggest publishing partner at onlive's launch @E3 2010 with Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. Then suddenly a deal of Judas and my number two of this list was announced and all the games from Judas were pulled from onlive, to the anger of many onlive users who were eagerly anticipating to play EA's big games. Judas still remains on onlive's partner page, which is fitting. Judas wants to copulate with Gaikai and make it his bitch. From the beginning of his existence Judas wanted to make all his bitch, but lately another started to piss off gamers, so Judas decided to play nice as is fitting again. But, as Judas is starting to grow balls again, he falls back into his old habits, old habits die hard.

2. Mudslinger. Yes, i mean you Gaikai. Our mudslinger likes to throw dirt at onlive. He also likes to mate with many partners, which isn't to Judas' liking, but he tolerates it, you already know what's coming, because old habits die hard. Our mudslinger recently mated with my number three on this list.

3. Hypocrite. Yes, why are you hiding, step forward Eurogamer. First our hypocrite says that onlive can't possibly work, then he says that when cloud gaming comes from our mudslinger it has to work and now he's suddenly mating with said mudslinger.

And last, Eurogamer's most vocal member, Richard Leadbetter. Do i really need words.

Well, aren't they a happy little family.

I'm a longtime fan of L'Inq and their cheeky style. So, one who reads this article shouldn't take it to seriously, but then, who knows.

Other great OnLive sites

The first is obviously OnLive itself. There you can signup for free, get other official info about the service and also get support for your onlive related problems.

Another great site is the OnLiveFans forum. This is the biggest onlive forum on the net, there are usually many friendly people hanging around. There you can find help for your onlive related problems and discuss onlive and non onlive related stuff. OnLiveFans also has a news section and they dig out pretty interesting news about OnLive.

LagThis has a section of the site devoted to OnLive and they are pretty thorough covering the news about OnLive.

OnLive Informer usually has up-to-date news about everything onlive and other themes related to onlive.

Cloudiem is a great news site for onlive themes. They have lots of videos and cover various onlive presentations at diverse shows. They also cover other cloud gaming services and cloud tech generally. Mark Gutierrez from Cloudiem is an enthusiastic guy and it shows in his work.

OnLive invites Sony and MS to adopt tech on PS3, 360

Yes, you read that right. OnLive is talking with the console guys to bring their service to them. Here's a quote:

When we asked OnLive VP of Engineering Joe Bentley if the company could see its service working with Microsoft and Sony's systems in future - rather than just bypassing them - he said:

"Absolutely, they would make great consoles. Our controller is a hybrid between a PS3 controller and an Xbox controller. It's all compatible, it would just work. There are OnLive guys chatting [Sony and MS], but we'll see where it goes. But it would absolutely work, we're ready to work with everybody.

He added: "What people are realising and waking up to is everything could be a console, why shouldn't you be able to take your game everywhere. I think the timing of this is perfect. When I joined the company I didn't think it was going to pan out this way.

Steve Perlman unveils amazing new wireless tech

This is a video of OnLive's CEO Steve Perlman who speaks as an alumnus at the Columbia Engineering School. He speaks about how Mova CONTOUR came to be, onlive and future cloud computing plans, and last but not least the first official unveiling of an amazing new wireless tech which is being developed at the Rearden Companies incubator. Steve says that this new wireless tech has sub-millisecond latency one to two miles away, a two millisecond latency up to 30 miles and possibly a reach of 250 miles, needs no cell towers, it isn't based on current wireless tech, has cheap antennas and radios. His explanation of how this works is multiple radios can use the same frequency and every user has a tiny electro-magnetic bubble around his phone which these radios can directly address on the same frequency. Clasic wireless antennas would only pick useless noise, when trying to catch those signals.

This is big. There are really clever and out of box thinking people working at Rearden.

Rearden is basically trying to enable the onlive service to be used on wireless networks, it sure looks like Rearden develops complementary tech like Mova Contour, onlive and now this wireless tech.

Steve is a really interesting speaker and the part about the new wireless tech comes up at the end of the video. The video is long, but it gets more interesting by the minute, you really shouldn't miss this video.

gdgt NYC 2011 interview with OnLive CEO Steve Perlman

In this almost 30 minutes long talk Steve shares some info on OnLive on tablets, the conversion of games to a form of media, social aspects of onlive, speaks about Ubisoft's From Dust game which comes with onlive exclusive touch controls, talks about publishers designing games for future hardware that is coming to onlive's data centers, games that will use more than one server and will come close to reality, the 10 Gbps onlive browser and confirms that games like Minecraft will run in the browser, voice chat and he compares onlive to a skyscraper and says they haven't even built the first floor, there are mind-blowing things coming when they build the next floors.

OnLive Viewer for HTC Flyer released

Through an update you can use the onlive viewer for the HTC Flyer, as the name says it's only a viewer like on the iPad, so you can do all the things like on the PC client except gaming. For those who don't have a Flyer fear not, the folks at the XDA Developers Forum have riped the onlive viewer APK and posted it, so you can use it on other Android devices. The app works only on WiFi, not on 3G. More about this on Engadget.

OnLive and Valve declare love

At least, that's according to OnLive.

Far from spurning OnLive as a worrying threat to his Steam business, Valve boss Gabe Newell "really likes" the games-on-demand service. At least, that's according to OnLive.

The Cloud gaming company has told CVG that it has engaged in "conversations" with Valve boss Gabe Newell about working more closely together, and that it considers the exec and his business as "friends".

And that's not all - Valve has even given the California-based start-up advice on what to include in the future feature set of its service.

"Gabe and his team really like what we're doing," said OnLive VP of Engineering Joe Bentley. "I can't go into specifics of any conversations we've had but we have had conversations with everybody in the industry. They really dig OnLive. Gabe is a funny guy because he's really not competitive - very similar to Randy [Pitchford]. He sees us a complementary in a lot of different ways.

"If you get to know Valve as a company, Steam was something that they just had to do because nobody else was handling a decent digital distribution model. Gabe and his team's hearts are really in making games like Portal 2 and so forth. If you see where Portal 2 is, it's on every other platform.

"If Gabe was so intent on Steam's dominance he would make it exclusive on Steam, but that's not what he is. He's about making the best quality games out there.

"He's really fascinated with our features and given us a lot of suggestions, they've got similar features coming out and we've chatted about really innovative ideas. I regard him and the company as friends. Sure we're going to have other people doing similar things, but the industry is big enough. We're only a 200 person start-up, we don't need to own it all, there's something for everybody."

OnLive showed its service off on a range of mobile devices at E3 earlier this month, including iPad. Bentley showed CVG how the company's controller will soon sync wirelessly with most popular tablets on the market.

Bentley told us: "For me, Steam can't really take their game to that mobile level... Gabe [Newell] walks around with his iPad so he sees OnLive and maybe thinks about how he can get Portal out to the world to the mobile market without compromises."

OnLive introduced virtualization of desktop

At the NExTWORK conference in New York, OnLive Founder and CEO, Steve Perlman presented what could be the future of cloud computing. OnLive, a company that has been known for their much talked about cloud video game system appears to be ready to move beyond video games, and into desktop applications.

Perlman showed how OnLive will run a Windows desktop on any device. He demoed it on a tablet, but it should be able to run on virtually any multimedia device capable of streaming OnLive.

What does this mean for the future of tablets, TVs, and computers? It means many things. All of your devices will be able to access the same remote desktop, and perform as though you are accessing your current PC desktop. Macs, tablets, iPhones, and other smartphones, as well as TVs will be able to provide you with the same desktop experience that your current PC can. Macs will be able to access Windows, tablets will be able to run PowerPoint Presentations, and your TV will be able to access anything your current PC can. Need to quickly access a document, just bring it up on your smartphone, just as you would on your PC at home.

The compression technology used by OnLive allows for a virtualization of the desktop, while not reducing the quality of the experience. Other software that is out now allows for virtual desktops, but they are extremely laggy, slow, and almost a waste of time to use. OnLive hopes to change this, and according to today’s demonstration, they may already have.

In light of the recent friendship of OnLive with Valve and Gabe Newell one could say that maybe that's why Valve became so friendly to OnLive, they see their opportunity of running Steam games on underpowered PCs, weak notebooks, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, TVs, Blu-Ray players, Google TV, set top boxes, cable boxes, etc.

I don't know what use of their virtual windows desktop will OnLive allow, if they intend to release it for free or charge money for it, but if it allows the user to do practically everything they do with their own PC and that even much faster, why would people who have a large Steam catalogue even buy games on the OnLive service. And what's with the games which are currently not on OnLive but available on the PC, like the games from EA, Activision and Bethesda. At least i know that EA would be really pissed.

Steam has a huge library of PC games, so gamers would obviously love that possibility.
Perhaps OnLive and Valve are already talking about a partnership to integrate Steam in OnLive through virtual windows and to bring the OnLive service to Steam. Here's a video of another company playing with the idea of running Steam on a virtual desktop.

Imagine how fast Steam games would install on let's say 10 Gbps like the OnLive browser speed. Though if OnLive and Steam partnered, the games could be simply synced between their servers, since they are connected through the internet backbone.

OnLive could also say, like Gaikai is doing, that games made for the PC don't need to be changed to run on their service, though they would be from Steam and running on virtual windows. You could also use moding tools to mod the games.

I must say i like OnLive because it hides those details of running the games on a machine, but with this it would be possible to tinker with the games you own.

I better not start with the possibility of torrenting stuff like applications, music, movies and games, this would be some legal fun for onlive.

OnLive data center in Luxembourg

For many gamers that connect to onlive from mainland Europe this is good news, because it carries the hope of reduced latency and better picture quality. The most important facts in the article are that onlive will build the data center in Bettembourg in four phases, each phase with 1500 servers. The first phase should be finished in July. OnLive is partnering with LuxTelecom and will be present at ICT Spring 2011. The data center will be seamlessly integrated with the US service and will also function as a backup for the UK data center. OnLive stated before that they plan to make their service available seamlessly world wide with the exception of some multiplayer functionality that requires good latency, but that might also change.

OnLive released F.3.A.R.

On tuesday F.E.A.R. 3 got released to the marketplace. The full PlayPass costs $49.99 with both 3 and 5 day rental options available. The game also supports both mouse and keyboard as well as Gamepad support, and OnLive Achievements. Online Voice-Chat is currently disabled, but this will be coming shortly. OnLive's CEO Steve Perlman speaks about the future of gaming. He shows onlive on tablets and presents the universal wireless controller for just about anything that will run onlive. Steve likes Virtua Tennis 2009. He also presents From Dust, the exclusive touch version of Eric Chahi's game that he's doing for Ubisoft. Steve also presents the onlive web browser which is running on a 10 Gbps connection to the onlive data centers. He also shows a trailer of the Batman Arkham City game, the trailer was made with onlive's Mova Contour tech and shows the future capability of onlive's servers.

The onlive wireless controller, for which OnLive built a custom software stack for 802.15.4 that responds in 800 microseconds, or under 2ms when or if you've got four controllers paired at once. The controller is a cross between the Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers. It feels solid and has a great weight balance. The controller also has media buttons added, which serve for taking the bragclips and for future use like movies.

OnLive describes itself as a games on demand service. A simple explanation how the service works is, it takes the input from your gaming controller, but instead of sending it to your gaming machine on which the game is processed, this input is sent via the internet to a server in an OnLive data center which is processing this input and calculating the next frame of the game to be displayed. That frame is then encoded with a proprietary OnLive encoder chip and sent back to your screen as fast as possible. OnLive uses the UDP internet protocol to ensure speedy communication between you and their servers. They've also made contracts with mayor ISPs to ensure a quality connection for their users.

As of now you can use OnLive on the PC, the Mac and the TV via the OnLive Game System which OnLive also calls the MicroConsole. The system requirements for OnLive on the PC or Mac are:
  • Internet Connection: 3 Mbps wired or Wi-Fi connection

  • Operating System: Windows 7 or Vista (32 or 64-bit) or XP SP3 (32-bit), Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later

  • Computer: Most PCs and netbooks, all Intel-based Macs

  • Screen Resolution: 1024x576

  • Internet Connection: 5 Mbps wired or Wi-Fi connection

  • Operating System: Windows® 7 or Vista (32 or 64-bit) or XP SP3 (32-bit)

  • Mac® OS X 10.6 or later

  • Computer: Dual-core PCs, all Intel-based Macs

  • Screen Resolution: 1280x720

  • On the PC side you should have at least a dual core processor and a graphics card with 256 MB that supports Pixel Shader 2.0.
    The OnLive Game System requires:
    1. Wired broadband connection near your television (3 Mbps minimum required, 5+ Mbps recommended)
    2. HDTV with an HDMI connector OR a Component Cable Adapter available from the OnLive Web Store
    As written OnLive currently works in 720p, but 1080p is already worked on and in closed beta testing. The games usually run with 60 fps.

    Some of the features of the service are the arena where you can spectate other players who have it enabled and voice chat with them, brag clips is a feature which records the last ten seconds of your gameplay, a profile with a friends list and text chat capability, the game marketplace, showcase section and the OnLive settings.

    OnLive runs PC versions of games on their servers and all of their games support mouse and keyboard input. Many of the games support XInput controllers like the official Xbox 360 gamepad. Here's a list of supported controllers:

  • OnLive also sells their own wireless controller, but it's currently only usable with the MicroConsole.

    OnLive was unveiled at the GDC 2009 conference. After that they were running an open beta period starting september of 2009 till their launch. OnLive officially launched on June 17th 2010, just after their presentation at E3 2010, with 17 games. Their launch was notable for the fact that EA pulled all their games from OnLive just prior launch and their relationship is still troubled. OnLive is currently only available in the USA and Canada, but you can use it from many countries around the world. They plan to launch their service in the UK this autumn and then branch on into Europe and Asia. They are partnered with major game publishers and technology partners. Notable investors in the company are AT&T, Warner Bros., Autodesk, Maverick Capital, BT and HTC.

    OnLive currently has more than 100 games available. Among those are games like Homefront, Duke Nukem Forever, Borderlands, Red Faction Armageddon, Batman Arkham Asylum and Just Cause 2. Many of their games are available through the OnLive PlayPack. The PlayPack is a Netflix like all-you-can-eat monthly flat-rate plan, which costs $9.99/month and includes a growing library of 60+ slightly older games. More and more publishers are releasing their games on OnLive day-and-date, with the notable absence of EA and Activision. The purchasing options for OnLive include the aforementioned PlayPack and what OnLive calls a PlayPass. With the PlayPass you are basically buying game time, you can rent games for 3 or 5 days with the prices ranging from $5 to $7, or you can buy a full PlayPass which is basically buying a game and also has comparable prices to retail games. You can also demo all games except Homefront mostly for 30 minutes and you can restart the demos as much as you like. Trials of games can also be launched directly with a link from web pages. OnLive also runs many promotional deals like Steam, where they lower the price of the games. They also have pre-order deals where the game is discounted, you get another free PlayPass or get the MicroConsole for free.

    Among the games coming to OnLive are Deus Ex Human Revolution, Warhammer 40k Space Marine, Batman Arkham City, Fear 3, From Dust, Dead Island, Dungeon Siege 3, Dirt 3, Call of Juarez The Cartel and The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings.

    Since the release the OnLive service has constantly evolved with additions like latency reduction, better picture quality, performance increases, achievements, voice chat, Facebook integration, friends invite, etc. They also have great plans for the future like games displaying in 1080p resolution, games displayed in 3D, integration into Vizio TVs, Blu-Ray players and Tablets, integration into cable boxes. In the autumn they plan to release their client for iOS and Android devices. They're making overlay touch controls for touch devices which will be usable in some games, Ubisoft's From Dust is getting exclusive touch controls for OnLive, and they will introduce the Universal OnLive Wireless Controller which can be used with PCs, Macs, TVs, Blu-Ray players, cable boxes, Google TV, tablets, smartphones, etc.
